Say no to sugar cravings!

If you are looking to curb those refined sugar cravings then shardunika or better known as gurmar leaves or botanically known as gymnema slyvestre.

In Ayurveda it is labelled as ‘madhunashini’ - meaning that it is a destroyer of the ‘sweet taste’ and this herb does not waste time getting to work because the moment it touches your tongue you will become insensitive to the sweet taste. This will immediately stop you from wanting more of the processed sugary items. This shows us how we are driven by the desire for the sensation of the sweet taste to make us feel good despite the longer term effects not being of benefit.

What’s most powerful is that it is not just effective on the palate alone but continues its work once consumed internally. It continues to neutralise the negative impact of the sweet taste further down the digestive chain.

It can be useful in the early onset of type 2 diabetes as well as help manage both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and any complications. It can also really help regulate appetite and prevent any cases of overindulgence and prevent cravings.

How does it work?
Well, there is an active compound of acids in gurmar leaves called gymnemic acids. The molecule structure of these gymnemic acids mimic the glucose molecule and are able to trick the glucose receptors on the taste buds and block any further desire for the sweet taste. A similar process happens in the small intestines.

These leaves are bitter and astringent in taste as well as light and dry in quality and both heating and pungent post digestion making is perfect for conditions of increased kapha or ama.

There are many medicinal uses of gurmar leaves and root. These include:

  • Inflammation and swelling of internal organs

  • Generalised or localised burning sensations in the body

  • Great to treat asthma and respiratory related issues

  • Great to help stop bleeding or excess bleeding (especially rectal and menstrual)

  • Healing to wounds and ulcers

  • Useful in skin issues such as dermatitis, psoriasis, keloids etc.

  • A key natural ingredient for diabetic patients

  • Can improve vision and useful in eye conditions

  • Dissipates excessive thirst

You can introduce this herb at home in the case of diabetes by chewing fresh leaves or in powder form taken with honey or milk preferably on an empty stomach. This herb is not designed to replace a healthy diet and exercise plan, but can certainly give support. Always consult you practitioner for safe dosage and use especially if you are already on medication.
